Google Business Profile tips for waste removal companies
Your Google Business Profile is probably your best source of calls. Here’s how to set it up properly, and what gets profiles suspended.

For most man and van and waste removal businesses, the Google Business Profile is the single most important piece of marketing they have. It’s what shows up in the map pack and on Google Maps, and a lot of customers ring straight from it without ever visiting your website.
Here’s how to get it right.
Set it up as a service-area business
You go to the customer, so set your profile up as a service-area business. If you work from home, hide your address. Google’s guidelines are clear that service-area businesses that don’t serve customers at their address shouldn’t show it.
Then add your service areas: the towns, cities or postcode areas you actually want to work in. Google lets you add up to 20. Be realistic. Listing half the country doesn’t help you rank further away. It just makes the profile less relevant.
Choose the right categories
Your primary category has a big influence on which searches you show up for. Pick the one that best matches the main job you want more of, not a vague or generic one. Then add secondary categories for the other work you genuinely do. Google allows up to nine.
Check what categories the businesses that rank top in your area are using. It’s a useful clue.
Keep the business name honest
Use your real business name, exactly as it appears on your van, your website and your paperwork. Adding keywords like “Rubbish Removal Leicester Cheap” to the name is against Google’s guidelines and can get your profile suspended. It also looks spammy to customers.
Fill in the services section properly
List every service you offer, with a short description of each: house clearances, garage clearances, garden waste removal, furniture removal, mattress collection, office clearances, whatever you actually do. This helps Google match you to more specific searches and helps customers see you do what they need.
Photos: real, recent and regular
Customers look at photos before they ring. Upload:
- Your vans, clearly branded if possible
- You and your crew (people trust faces)
- Before-and-after shots of real jobs (with the customer’s permission)
- Your logo and a cover photo
Add new photos regularly. A profile that last changed two years ago looks like a business that might not be around any more.
Reviews: the part you can control most
Reviews matter for ranking and for getting the call. Build a routine:
- Ask every happy customer, ideally at the end of the job when they’re pleased
- Send a short direct link by text or WhatsApp so it takes them seconds
- Reply to every review, good and bad, politely and quickly
Never buy reviews, never offer discounts or freebies in exchange for reviews, and never only ask the customers you think will be happy while steering others away. All of these break Google’s policies, and fake reviews are illegal in the UK. More in how to get more 5-star reviews as a man and van.
Use posts and updates
Google Business Profile lets you publish short updates. Use them for seasonal reminders (spring clear-outs, garden waste season, end-of-tenancy periods), recent jobs and offers. They won’t transform your rankings on their own, but they keep the profile active and give customers more reasons to call.
Keep hours and contact details accurate
If your hours say open and nobody answers, you lose the job and the customer may leave a review saying so. Keep your hours, phone number and website link up to date, and set special hours for bank holidays.
Mistakes that get profiles suspended
- Keywords stuffed into the business name
- A virtual office or PO box used as an address
- Several profiles for the same business in different towns without a real staffed location in each
- Fake or incentivised reviews
A suspended profile can take weeks to recover, and those are weeks of missed calls.
The short version
Service-area setup, the right primary category, an honest name, every service listed, real photos added regularly, and a steady flow of genuine reviews you reply to. Get those right and you’re ahead of a lot of your competitors.
